Digital Collaboration in Swiss Secure Cloud:Deploy ownCloud on Hidora
Data storage, exchange and synchronization are integral parts of the working processes in modern companies. In the world, where most of the collaborations are digital, it is important to choose the right application to work with your data securely. Are you sure your data is safe? Who has access to it?
Today I would like to talk about the ownCloud application which you can install on Hidora Platform just in a click from our marketplace.
ownCloud is a rapidly developing software, which has a great community and is used by more than 10 million users.
OwnCloud is a popular open-source file storage that is available for free and provides an opportunity to host your data on your own private server or cloud. What gives you a high level of control and guarantees that your data is stored in a certain country and data centre.
Using ownCloud you can store different types of data like files, folders, or even contacts, calendars, etc. Also, it offers a wide range of collaboration features like file exchange, synchronization and management users’ permissions. The most important thing is that wherever you are, you have an access to your data from your mobile device, desktop, or a web browser. Besides, users have a full control over data transferring.
The main advantage of this service is unlimited storage for synchronization because your storage size depends on your servers. Another advantage is that you fully control where exactly your data is hosted, which makes sense due to GDPR compliance considerations.
3. Choose your domain name and click Install
4. Once ownCloud is installed, you will receive access credentials
Using Hidora you can easily increase your storage size for ownCloud instance. Just go to Hidora dashboard at app.hidora.com and after the creation of your environment look at the middle part of the wizard, where you will see the disk limit slider. Adjust manually the amount of storage space you need, it will be allocated dynamically without need to restart your servers.
You can access, upload and manage your files and folders using web management UI and desktop filesync clients that support different operating systems like Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. File sharing feature is pretty mature as provides you with ability to share files with individual users, groups of users or generate pre-signed URLs that are available for any unauthorized user.
Another advantage is that ownCloud supports files encryption. So you can encrypt your files on the server doubling the security of your data. In addition, you can enable end-to-end encryption for data exchange and file sharing.
Using this approach you can be sure that your data is completely encrypted and neither the system administrator nor any other untrusted user who have access to the infrastructure can read the data.
Integration with LDAP/SAML
If your organization uses LDAP-based user directory or you use SAML 2.0 compatible identity provider (IdP), you can simply integrate it with ownCloud. So there is no need to have separate accounts to access ownCloud.
2-Factor authentication is a modern security approach to protect against data breaches. ownCloud has integration with services like Google Authenticator or an Open-Source implementation of the TOTP standard like LinOTP.
Support of Multiple External Storage Backends
If you already have some data stored on an FTP drive, S3 bucket or even Dropbox or Google Drive, you can integrate these services with ownCloud and provide a single pane of glass to manage files and folders on these remote storage backends.
Lastly, if you didn’t find necessary features out of the box, you can find them at the ownCloud marketplace. For instance, using this approach you can extend ownCloud functionality with full-fledged calendar application, contacts management service or even todo list.
